Wild at Heart: Pumba

There's a version of travel that happens on land, off the ship, in service of others — assisting the shore excursions team as extra support guide, guiding fellow travelers through a day that turns out to be unforgettable for everyone involved. That's how a day at Pumba Private Game Reserve in South Africa became one of the most emotionally compelling experiences a sailor could ask for.
The baboons are the first to set the tone: they bolt the second people get close, and that's exactly how it should be. They're not there for anyone's entertainment; this is their territory, and every visitor is simply passing through. Then come the giraffes — and my goodness, giraffes are the real definition of magnificence. Watching one move, unhurried and impossibly tall against the horizon, is a lesson in quiet grace.
The elephants tend to surprise people most. For animals so enormous, they're remarkably sweet, and they don't mind coming up close — there's a gentleness to them that catches everyone off guard. And then, the lions and lionesses. That kind of power isn't something to approach. Let them strut, let them own the ground beneath them, and admire from a respectful distance, exactly as their natural habitat demands.
Respect is the thread that runs through the whole day — respect for their space, their pace, their world. A life at sea teaches you that you're always a guest wherever the journey takes you, whether that's a foreign port or the African bush. Pumba is a beautiful reminder of that, and an open invitation for anyone who gets the chance to experience it too.

Some friendships are made over coffee; others are forged somewhere between the Mediterranean and the Canaries, a gala shift, and dancing our way through ports. Anastasia, my brilliant friend from New Zealand and fellow former shipmate, is one of those friendships, I’m incredibly grateful for. We worked in entertainment, sailed across seas together, shared unforgettable nights and countless laughs, and made memories that have lasted far beyond our time on board. This includes—her being my tour guide when I first visited New Zealand. Today, she’s an incredible businesswoman with the same energy, ambition, and sparkle she always had—and she’s still a fantastic dancer. For real, she can deliver a real choreography on stage. The beautiful thing about life at sea is that you never know which friendships will become lifelong treasures. Anastasia is one of those treasures.
